Our Mission
MOTHER OF SORROWS CATHOLIC SCHOOL MISSION
Mother of Sorrows Catholic School is dedicated to educating students of all faiths in a Catholic, Christ-centered environment. Spiritual engagement and rigorous educational experiences inspire each student to live by Christian values, achieve academic excellence, and become global leaders.
Our History
Mother of Sorrows School was established as a mission of the Diocese of Greensburg in 1963, to help teach the children of the parish. Our school operated as a parish school supporting Mother of Sorrows and different pastors through the years until 2009. In July of 2009, Mother of Sorrows School became a separate Charitable Trust and regional school. It now supports the mission of the parishes that combine to create the region. These parishes include Mother of Sorrows, Murrysville, St Mary, Our Lady of Lourdes, Export, St. John De la Salle, Delmont and St. Regis, Trafford. These parishes work with our school to fulfill our mission and realize our goals.
We are proud of our history and reputation for academic excellence and spiritual growth. By careful governance, prayers, and continual improvement, Mother of Sorrows School will continue its traditions, not only for today, but also tomorrow. We have been and will continue to be a family rooted with you.
School Crest
The Mother of Sorrows School crest is fashioned after the Miraculous Medal. The Miraculous Medal is a Marion symbol of devotion to Mary. It is also known as the Medal of Immaculate Conception. Its design originated from St. Catherine Laboure’s vision of the Blessed Mary in France around 1830. Mary said to Catherine, “Have a medal stuck upon this medal. Those who wear it will receive great graces”. The M stands for Mary, who presents our prayers to her son to seek His graces. The cross and bar surmounting Mary’s name symbolizes Christ’s suffering on the cross and redemption. It also reminds us of her presence at the foot of the cross at her son’s death. The moon symbolizes Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth. The twelve stars symbolize the Twelve Apostles who form the Church. The two wavy lines symbolizes the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary beating in unison, which symbolizes the love between Mary and Jesus.
